Not sure if everyone noticed, but the Winbond W25X40BV comes in a PDIP-8 package as well as the surface-mount versions. Possibly a good choice for anyone trying to do prototyping on a development board, or ir you're interested in putting it in a chip socket.
Jason, or someone else at XMOS: Any idea if the W25X40BV signals you're using are backwards-compatible with the W25X40A? I think it should be if you're not using the Dual I/O or Unique ID signals (0xBB, 0x92, 0x4B). They identify with the same JEDEC ID, so they're indistinguishable from a software point of view (other than that the *A series chips don't support some of the new non-standard features).
Cheers!

Digi-Key seems to be the only source for them. They have plenty in stock, though - 11,508 of the SOIC parts!
